It is believed that the onion originated in Asia, several thousand years ago it was being cultivated in Mesopotamia, India and Egypt and was probably introduced into Europe by the Romans. Nowadays it is one of the commonest vegetables. Powdered onion can be used for flavouring most savoury dishes.
